The VS–9 has entered passenger service

Starting today, our first VS–9, Kermadec, will carry passengers across Auckland’s Waitematā Harbour, on electric hydrofoiling experiences run by Fullers360.

This is the first time that an electric hydrofoiling vessel, certified for commercial use, will be used in a tourism application anywhere in the world.

We're incredibly proud to have partnered with New Zealand's largest ferry operator to set this new standard for innovation and sustainability.

The first passengers on the VS–9 will be struck by how smooth and quiet the experience is. Travelling at 25 knots with a range of up to 50 nautical miles, it's more like flying than sailing.

Our CEO, Eric Laakmann, said it was fantastic that the public can now experience what it's like to fly on a VS–9, and a huge step on the path of Fullers' journey to have net-zero operations by 2040.

The VS–9 has a spacious, light-filled interior, with panoramic windows providing stunning views of Auckland’s iconic harbour and skyline. The vessel's zero-emission propulsion system supports New Zealand’s broader sustainability goals, aligning with the government’s vision for greener transportation networks.

Across extensive testing, the VS–9's energy efficiency has translated into significantly reduced running costs, compared to a displacement vessel of the same size.

It can comfortably operate in a range of marine environments, including those that may otherwise carry wake or speed restrictions, or be sensitive to erosion.

Tim O'Halloran, Chief Commercial Officer at Fullers360, called the VS–9 a game-changer for their fleet and their passengers.

"Its innovative design and sustainable operation are perfectly suited to Auckland’s vibrant maritime landscape, and we are excited to welcome our first passengers onboard."

We're continuing to collaborate with Fullers to inspire further advancements in marine sustainability and innovation, with the VS–18, a 100-seater electric hydrofoiling commuter ferry, on the drawing board.
